These lines taken from my early copy of R D Blackmore’s famous novel Lorna Doone apply to today just as they did when he wrote of it in 1869 – and just as they did during the time he was writing about, the early 1600s. Those of us that work or venture regularly on Exmoor know just how rapidly the mists and fogs can descend and how very easy it is to lose all sense of bearing. Blackmore captures perfectly the way the mists obliterate all sound and how quickly you become cold and soaked to the skin …
