nature notes 10

There are tens of thousands of miles of hedgerows in England, some many centuries old. Equally many miles have been lost as fields become larger and more agri-efficient (what a ghastly word!!). Richard Jefferies, writing in the 1870s recognised the contribution that they make to our landscape. They are also the super-highways for birds and animals to traverse the countryside in relative safety.
